Bugs (Anne La Berge Amsterdam) is an exploration into improvisation combining synthesized electronic sounds with the acoustic improvisation of the ensemble, all cued by electronic boxes displaying LED lights cueing the interpretations of the musicians and shadow puppeteers. Lisa Cay Miller’s work, Alea Jacta Est is a compositional expression of Canadian feminist history highlighting events of the past 100 years (Nellie McClung’s satire--the Women's Parliament of 1914, the birthdate of Marc Lépine, 1964, the young man who murdered fourteen women in the Montreal Massacre, and the present day gender wage gap). Lori Freedman (Montreal) plays upon the juxtaposition of instrumental pairings and spacings.

Amsterdam based composer/flautist and electronics musician Anne La Berge and Montreal composer/clarinetist Lori Freedman will collaborate with the compost shadow puppterty of Vanocuver's Mind of a Snail to create and event of beauty and intricacy. There will be the sound of searching, singing bugs, a compositional expression of Canadian feminist history and unique instrumental pairings in a journey of collage, contrast and juxtapostion. The raw, energetic improvisational force of Orkestra Futura will fill the sublime Pyatt Hall. Mind of a Snail projections will move with and in contrast to the music, intermingling the stunning visual and aural aspects of the experience. And... there will be chocolate!! Miller is working with Master Proprietor Greg Hook from Chocolate Arts, who is creating chocolates designed especially to be paired with Miller's new composition.
The NOW Society is excited to sharte the Modality project with young students and improvisers. There will be three interactive Modality workshops: for the Laura Secord Elementary School, Burnaby Mountain Secondary School and for the general public.
